A collection featuring two folders of materials (news clippings and flyers, statements, press releases, etc.) documenting the highly publicized police brutality case of the 1983 murder of Michael Stewart by New York Transit police. Michael Stewart was a 25 year-old Brooklyn based Black graffiti artist living in NYC, who allegedly tagged a subway station wall and was subsequently handcuffed and beaten by Transit Police on September 15, 1983. He was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in a coma, and died thirteen days later. Despite clear evidence and hospital admission reports of obvious head blunt force head trauma, official NYC Medical Examiner reports stated that "no physical injury had contributed to Stewart's death" and failed to indict the police officers involved of any crime of homicide. Nine months after his murder, three of eleven transit police officers were indicted for "failing to protect (Stewart's) safety" while in their custody. Michael's death, and the subsequent legal proceedings failing to secure justice for his murder, (lack of indictment of the police officers, blatant cover-ups of the medical records, and Mayor Koch's public responses), launched community outrage and organized response.
