Lexington Control Unit for Women

The Lexington Control Unit was an experimental government prison built in Lexington, Kentucky. It is located in the basement of a high security building, totally separate from the rest of the Lexington Federal Prison. The Control Unit at Lexington was the first of its kind in the country—a special unit designed with the express purpose of confinement for women political prisoners. This collection contains materials related to the campaign to shut it down, its conditions and the women forced to live there.
