MOVE was a communal organization that advocated for Black Liberation and for nature laws and natural living. It was founded in 1972 in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania by John Africa (born Vincent Leaphart). The name, styled in all capital letters, is not an acronym. Members of MOVE were deeply religious and believed that all living beings are interdependent, and their lives should be treated as equally important. The group combined revolutionary ideology, similar to that of the Black Panthers, with work for animal rights.
The organization was targeted by police and dramatically attacked several times; several members of the organization, including children and infants, were killed in these assaults. The MOVE 9 was a group of innocent men and women who were imprisoned in 1979, following a massive police assault on MOVE headquarters in Philadelphia. Two of the 9 died in prison; the others have been released.
This collection includes original writings by MOVE members, newspaper articles, pamphlets and court/parole documents.
