Produced by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee of California, this periodical was published from 1964 to 1970. From its humble origins as the Friends of SNCC Office in the Fillmore District, the Movement Newspaper grew to at its peak having 2,500 paid subscribers and nationwide distribution. Its initial goal was to keep West Coast members of SNCC in touch with activities in the South which later expanded to includes issues and topics outside of the American South and the traditional civil rights movement including national and international issues of racism, anti-imperialism and liberation struggles. The staff of the Movement was unpaid and attempted to function in a collective and democratic fashion.
