How does this work?
There are many ways to search the collections of the Freedom Archives. Below is a brief guide that will help you conduct effective searches. Note, anytime you search for anything in the Freedom Archives, the first results that appear will be our digitized items. Information for items that have yet to be scanned or yet to be digitized can still be viewed, but only by clicking on the show link that will display the hidden (non-digitized) items. If you are interested in accessing these non-digitized materials, please email info@freedomarchives.org.
Exploring the Collections without the Search Bar
Under the heading Browse By Collection, you’ll notice most of the Freedom Archives’ major collections. These collections have an image as well as a short description of what you’ll find in that collection. Click on that image to instantly explore that specific collection.
Basic Searching
You can always type what you’re looking for into the search bar. Certain searches may generate hundreds of results, so sometimes it will help to use quotation marks to help narrow down your results. For instance, searching for the phrase Black Liberation will generate all of our holdings that contain the words Black and Liberation, while searching for “Black Liberation” (in quotation marks) will only generate our records that have those two words next to each other.
Advanced Searching
The Freedom Archives search site also understands Boolean search logic, specifcally AND/+, NOT/-, and OR operators. Click on this link for a brief tutorial on how to use Boolean search logic. Our search function also understands “fuzzy searches.” Fuzzy searches utilize the (*) and will find matches even when users misspell words or enter in only partial words for the search. For example, searching for liber* will produce results for liberation/liberate/liberates/etc.
Keyword Searches
You’ll notice that under the heading KEYWORDS, there are a number of words, phrases or names that describe content. Sometimes these are also called “tags.” Clicking on these words is essentially the same as conducting a basic search.

We are also in the process of scanning and uploading thousands of historical documents which enrich our media holdings. Our collection includes weekly news, poetry, music programs; in-depth interviews and reports on social and cultural issues; numerous voices from behind prison walls; diverse activists; and pamphlets, journals and other materials from many radical organizations and movements.

Tricontinental

This collection contains issues of Tricontinental, founded in 1967 by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) following the first Tricontinental conference. These periodicals, published in Havana, Cuba, cover a wide range of topics, from national liberation movements to the capitalistic exploitation of natural resources in various countries. The goal of this publication is to expose imperialistic policies and create international solidarity with leftist political movements. These articles focus on the struggles of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and include interviews with revolutionaries, cultural pieces such as poetry, analysis, and more.

"A Vietnamese Fighter" is an autobiography of a Vietnamese hero, Nguyen Van Quang, where he states why he became a fighter for the National Liberation Front. "Indonesia: Portrait of a Neocolony" details the New Order established under Generals Suharto and Nasution, and Foreign Minister Adam Malik. This new order came about when Sukarno was removed from presidency during a bloodbath against Indonesian communists. This New Order is pro-U.S. and has opened Indonesia's rich natural resources to U.S. corporations under the guidance of the World Bank. "Apartheid, Imperialist Monster" an article by Alex La Guma, a South African intellectual, where he analyzes the nature of white South Africa's colonialist-imperialist policies. "Education in Free Mozambique" a collection of first-hand accounts of the meaning of education to FRELIMO fighters. FRELIMO is the liberation front in Mozambique. "Present and Future of a Yankee Base" a history of the struggle for control of Eritrea and an analysis of the importance of Kagnew Station to the imperialist control of Africa. Eritrea's geographic location makes it ideal for the establishment of a major U.S. communications base. "Irrintzik" a summary of the history of the Basque people, their struggle for national self-determination and freedom, and their organization the ETA. The Basque people live in the north of Spain and south of France in the mountainous Pyrenees region but have been subject to Spanish dictatorship. "The Ford of Betrayal" details the last days of "the guerrilla Tania" who infiltrated the Bolivia's high society, becoming of one Cuba's most successful spies in Latin America. This details her final days as a member of Che's guerrilla group before being killed in an ambush. "The Irregular Armies" is a short story about the killing of the Bolivian colonel in West Germany last year. This colonel cut Che's hands off and in turn was executed by a woman member of the Bolivian ELN. "Bolivia: People Aplenty, but They Lack Arms" details one of the military coups in Bolivia in 1971. The ultra-right wing government pushed out General Juan Jose Torres' nationalist-reformist government. "Panama Canal, Sociological Experiment" recounts the history of the Panama Canal , how the Canal Zone came to be in U.S. hands and U.S. cultural penetration of Panama. "Ecuador, The Oil Orgy" discusses the discovery in Ecuador of some of the largest oil deposits in the world. The rights to extract oil have been sold to various oil companies creating a petroleum "festival". "To the Editor, A Letter on Peru"

"North Kalimantan: Past and Present of a People" details the history of North Kalimantan (province in Indonesia), from indigenous habitation to colonization and the rise of the People's Party led by A.M. Azahari. "Guatemala: Example of Heroism" commemorates the 7th Anniversary of the heroic guerrilla uprisings in Guatemala. "Angola: The Armed Struggle Throughout the Territory" commemorates the beginning of the armed liberation struggle in Angola. This article details the renewed hostilities of the Portuguese troops backed by NATO. "Congo (L): Forced to Increase Struggle" analyzes the assassination of Patrice Lumumba and the resulting world day of solidarity with the people of the Congo. "NATO: Another Instrument of the Colonialists" exposes NATO's actions in maintaining the colonialist and neocolonialist forces in Africa. "Libraries: Centers of Propaganda and Proselytism" details the ways libraries in Latin America cater to imperialistic agendas by promoting the 'excellence of Yankee culture'. "South Africa: Out of Work = Out of Home" The South African Bantu Administration published draft regulations that, if passed, would evict Africans from their homes if they have been out of work for over a month. "Guadalupe is a Colony" The students of Guadalupe of the AGEG (General Association of Students of Guadalupe) lay out evidence of the lasting colonial oppression in Guadalupe. "The Oakland Seven" details the demonstration held around the Oakland Induction Center and the resulting trial of the Oakland Seven. "The United States: Its Quota of Blood and Dollars" details U.S. aggression in Korea and Vietnam and the millions of dollars spent on war efforts. "Camilo Torres: Interview with the Mother of the Guerrilla Priest" interview with Isabel Restrepo, mother of the Colombian guerrilla priest Camilo Torres. "Zimbabwe: A War that is Spreading" details the patriotic forces of the people living in the countryside of Zimbabwe "The Supreme Council of the NCL Decides to Move to the Liberated Zones" reports the advancement efforts of the People's Liberation Army in the Congo against reactionary forces. "Political Program of the Neo Lao Haksat" details U.S. imperialistic forces in Vietnam. The Neo Lao Haskat lays out their political point program which aims to overthrow U.S. neocolonialism. "Visit from the Syrian Delegation" is an overview of the meeting between members from the Syrian delegation and members from the Politico-economic Department of the OSPAAAL to discuss the Arab Socialist Party and the case of Palestine. "Their Own Struggle: More Effective Solidarity" calls for all revolutionary and progressive countries of the world to increase aid to the struggling organizations fighting for liberation in Portuguese colonies and in South Africa. "Activities of the Executive Secretariat" overview of the declarations of Solidarity from the Executive Secretariat of the OSPAAAL. ["What the Press Covers Up" "Domestic Law and International Order"] Letters to OSPAAAL "Guerrillas in Korea" expresses solidarity with revolutionary forces in the southern part of Korea against US imperialist forces.

"Korea: A War of Resistance" details the U.S. war of aggression against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the resulting U.S. occupation of South Korea. The US implemented various war maneuvers in the South in an attempt to provoke a new war. "Africa: Imperialist Strategy in the South" commemorates the 19th Anniversary of the national strike and the first big struggle of South African peoples against apartheid. Included is an overview of South African resistance despite renewed imperialist strategies to strengthen political, economic and military alliances among racist regimes. "South Yemen: Continuing the Struggle" political manifesto issued by the National Front of the Republic of South Yemen concerning the Second World Congress with the Arab Peoples. "Arab Peoples: the Revolutionary Response to Falseness" denounces the state of Israel as an instrument of aggression towards all Arab peoples and an instrument for U.S. economic, military and political interests. OSPAAAL calls for the celebration of an International Day of Solidarity with the Arab Peoples. "USA: Initiation Rites for Students" exposes the commodification of university education. "Peru: The Land Problem" argues that the Peruvian revolution from Spanish forces simply reinstated the feudal base of the economy where agrarian feudalism was linked to the industrial, commercial and financial bourgeoisie. "Laos: Presence of the Neo Lao Haksat in Vientiane" argues for the safeguarding of the presence of the Neo Lao Haksat in Vientiane in order to attain national harmony, the consolidation of peace, independence and neutrality in Laos. "Dhufar: The Crisis of the Revolution and the New Orientation" outline of the difficulties facing the revolutionary efforts in Dhufar (Dhofar) and the reorientation of their political agenda. "Haiti: The Launching of the People's Guerrilla War" outlines the beginnings of the Haitian revolution in light of contemporary revolutionary mobilizations. "Cameroon: Recent Guerrilla Operations" details the mobilization of guerrilla soldiers after Ahmadou Ahidjo's tour through various cities in Cameroon. "Niger: Neo-colonial Heart of Africa" analyzes the beginnings of the guerrilla movements in Niger. "The Vietnamese Homeland Unified and Socialist" transcript of speech given by Le Duan, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Worker's Party, at the first session of the joint National Assembly of Viet Nam. Le Duan reports on the Vietnamese people's task of wiping out the scars of imperialist aggression in order to build a better society. "Bolivia's Outlet to the Sea: An Imperialist Way Out" reviews the history of The War of the Pacific and its implications in the contemporary politics of Bolivia, Chile and Peru. This article argues that Bolivia's desire to recover its outlet to the sea is backed by U.S. imperialistic designs. "NATO and South Africa" interview with the honorary Secretary of the British Apartheid Movement, Abdul S. Minty. Minty discusses relations between South Africa and western powers and the role of South Africa in NATO's plans. "Propaganda and Advertising: Two Sides of the Same Coin" analyzes the relationship between imperialist government, multinational enterprises, salesmen, scientists, the system's ideologues, and the mass media in the manipulation of consciences and bourgeois lifestyles. According to this article, these relationships invalidates arguments of journalistic neutrality. "East Timor: FRETILIN Speaks" statement from Abilio Araujo where he speaks about the heroic struggle the Timorese people are waging against the occupation troops of the Indonesian fascist regime. Araujo is a member of the National Department of Political Orientation and the Political-Military and Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor and is also the Minister of Economic and Social Affairs of the Government of East Timor. "Puerto Rico: Crisis and Repression" talk given by leaders of the Puerto Rican Socialist Party, Carlos Gallisa and Alberto Perez, concerning the political and social situation in Puerto Rico, colony of United States imperialism. "Angola: An End to the Mercenaries' Myth" excerpt from a book written by Raul Valdes Vivo. This story shares the perspectives of a group of mercenaries who carried out attacks against natives with impunity. In Angola these mercenaries faced resistance from the Angolan people both on a field of battle or in the courts.

"The Caribbean Today" explores the diverse cultures found in the Caribbean, where the people share a common heritage, a united destiny and a unique civilization. "The Undeniable Nation" interview with Juan Mari Bras, leader of the independence movement and the Puerto Rican Left. Bras highlights the relationship and influence between Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. He also discusses the issue of Puerto Rican nationality and citizenship separate from U.S. citizenship. "A Dead End Street" Discusses the history of occupations and invasions of Haiti that have worsened the social and political crises, including the most recent U.S. intervention in 2004 in order to ensure "democracy". "The Caribbean: Economy and Integration" analyzes the possible economic integration of the Caribbean to the global economy where it would have to compete with northern resources. Historically, Caribbean integration has been a struggle for independence and the maintenance of identity. This article argues that the economic community must recognize the conditions peculiar to the Caribbean when incorporating the the global exchange. Emphasis must be placed on development rather than the supplier of resources concept. "Mandela's Ideal" discusses Mandela's fight for democracy and Cuban solidarity on the 10 year anniversary of democracy in South Africa. "A Place of Human Hope" Thabo Mbeki's, president elect of the Republic of South Africa, speech that accounts for the past 10 years of democracy in South Africa and the challenges that lie ahead. "The Writer of Portuguese-Speaking Africa and the Future" reflection of the multiple situations that Portuguese speaking Africans face when writing with an imposed language and navigating the public and publishing houses. "From Israel the Plan, From US the Image" interview with Dr. Jehad K. Suleiman Rashid, coordinator of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Europe, where he discusses the United State's support of Israel. "In the Net of Militarization" analyzes the military industry as one of the most lucrative businesses in the world and the implications of militarization in South America. "Looking Back: The Eisenhower Administration and the Guatemala of Jacobo Arbenz" reflections on the communist revolution in Guatemala and President Eisenhower's decision to establish the covert operation of PBSUCCESS that overthrew Jacobo Arbenz's presidency. "Yeye's Victory" excerpt from the prologue of Haydee Santamaria's first biography. "War Drums and Elections" discusses George W. Bush's measures against Cuba in 2006 in an attempt to make Cuba an American neo-colony. "The Teheran Conference" overview of the Tehran conference that situates The Tehran Declaration's impact on Iran. Despite claiming to "respect the freedom and tolerance of all nations" US policies and aggressive military actions in Iran and Palestine say otherwise.
