How does this work?
There are many ways to search the collections of the Freedom Archives. Below is a brief guide that will help you conduct effective searches. Note, anytime you search for anything in the Freedom Archives, the first results that appear will be our digitized items. Information for items that have yet to be scanned or yet to be digitized can still be viewed, but only by clicking on the show link that will display the hidden (non-digitized) items. Exploring the Collections without the Search Bar
Under the heading Browse By Collection, you’ll notice most of the Freedom Archives’ major collections. These collections have an image as well as a short description of what you’ll find in that collection. Click on that image to instantly explore that specific collection.
Basic Searching
You can always type what you’re looking for into the search bar. Certain searches may generate hundreds of results, so sometimes it will help to use quotation marks to help narrow down your results. For instance, searching for the phrase Black Liberation will generate all of our holdings that contain the words Black and Liberation, while searching for “Black Liberation” (in quotation marks) will only generate our records that have those two words next to each other.
Advanced Searching
The Freedom Archives search site also understands Boolean search logic, specifcally AND/+, NOT/-, and OR operators. Click on this link for a brief tutorial on how to use Boolean search logic. Our search function also understands “fuzzy searches.” Fuzzy searches utilize the (*) and will find matches even when users misspell words or enter in only partial words for the search. For example, searching for liber* will produce results for liberation/liberate/liberates/etc.
Keyword Searches
You’ll notice that under the heading KEYWORDS, there are a number of words, phrases or names that describe content. Sometimes these are also called “tags.” Clicking on these words is essentially the same as conducting a basic search.
Welcome to the Freedom Archives' Digital Search Engine.The Freedom Archives contains over 12,000 hours of audio and video recordings which date from the late-1960s to the mid-90s and chronicle the progressive history of the Bay Area, the United States, and international movements. We are also in the process of scanning and uploading thousands of historical documents which enrich our media holdings. Our collection includes weekly news, poetry, music programs; in-depth interviews and reports on social and cultural issues; numerous voices from behind prison walls; diverse activists; and pamphlets, journals and other materials from many radical organizations and movements.

Tricontinental

This collection contains issues of Tricontinental, founded in 1967 by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) following the first Tricontinental conference. These periodicals, published in Havana, Cuba, cover a wide range of topics, from national liberation movements to the capitalistic exploitation of natural resources in various countries. The goal of this publication is to expose imperialistic policies and create international solidarity with leftist political movements. These articles focus on the struggles of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and include interviews with revolutionaries, cultural pieces such as poetry, analysis, and more.

"Korea: A War of Resistance" details the U.S. war of aggression against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the resulting U.S. occupation of South Korea. The US implemented various war maneuvers in the South in an attempt to provoke a new war. "Africa: Imperialist Strategy in the South" commemorates the 19th Anniversary of the national strike and the first big struggle of South African peoples against apartheid. Included is an overview of South African resistance despite renewed imperialist strategies to strengthen political, economic and military alliances among racist regimes. "South Yemen: Continuing the Struggle" political manifesto issued by the National Front of the Republic of South Yemen concerning the Second World Congress with the Arab Peoples. "Arab Peoples: the Revolutionary Response to Falseness" denounces the state of Israel as an instrument of aggression towards all Arab peoples and an instrument for U.S. economic, military and political interests. OSPAAAL calls for the celebration of an International Day of Solidarity with the Arab Peoples. "USA: Initiation Rites for Students" exposes the commodification of university education. "Peru: The Land Problem" argues that the Peruvian revolution from Spanish forces simply reinstated the feudal base of the economy where agrarian feudalism was linked to the industrial, commercial and financial bourgeoisie. "Laos: Presence of the Neo Lao Haksat in Vientiane" argues for the safeguarding of the presence of the Neo Lao Haksat in Vientiane in order to attain national harmony, the consolidation of peace, independence and neutrality in Laos. "Dhufar: The Crisis of the Revolution and the New Orientation" outline of the difficulties facing the revolutionary efforts in Dhufar (Dhofar) and the reorientation of their political agenda. "Haiti: The Launching of the People's Guerrilla War" outlines the beginnings of the Haitian revolution in light of contemporary revolutionary mobilizations. "Cameroon: Recent Guerrilla Operations" details the mobilization of guerrilla soldiers after Ahmadou Ahidjo's tour through various cities in Cameroon. "Niger: Neo-colonial Heart of Africa" analyzes the beginnings of the guerrilla movements in Niger. ["Experiences For Other Peoples" "Sharpen the Tactical Focus" "Interested in the Problems of Africa" "Hear the Violence of Our Brothers" "Militant Solidarity with Latin America"]: Letters to OSPAAAL "Korea: Hostile Acts by the United States" details U.S. imperialistic acts of aggression in Korea and calls for solidarity with Korean reunification efforts.
