How does this work?
There are many ways to search the collections of the Freedom Archives. Below is a brief guide that will help you conduct effective searches. Note, anytime you search for anything in the Freedom Archives, the first results that appear will be our digitized items. Information for items that have yet to be scanned or yet to be digitized can still be viewed, but only by clicking on the show link that will display the hidden (non-digitized) items. If you are interested in accessing these non-digitized materials, please email info@freedomarchives.org.

Under the heading Browse By Collection, you’ll notice most of the Freedom Archives’ major collections. These collections have an image as well as a short description of what you’ll find in that collection. Click on that image to instantly explore that specific collection.
Basic Searching
You can always type what you’re looking for into the search bar. Certain searches may generate hundreds of results, so sometimes it will help to use quotation marks to help narrow down your results. For instance, searching for the phrase Black Liberation will generate all of our holdings that contain the words Black and Liberation, while searching for “Black Liberation” (in quotation marks) will only generate our records that have those two words next to each other.
Advanced Searching
The Freedom Archives search site also understands Boolean search logic, specifcally AND/+, NOT/-, and OR operators. Click on this link for a brief tutorial on how to use Boolean search logic. Our search function also understands “fuzzy searches.” Fuzzy searches utilize the (*) and will find matches even when users misspell words or enter in only partial words for the search. For example, searching for liber* will produce results for liberation/liberate/liberates/etc.

Tricontinental

This collection contains issues of Tricontinental, founded in 1967 by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) following the first Tricontinental conference. These periodicals, published in Havana, Cuba, cover a wide range of topics, from national liberation movements to the capitalistic exploitation of natural resources in various countries. The goal of this publication is to expose imperialistic policies and create international solidarity with leftist political movements. These articles focus on the struggles of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and include interviews with revolutionaries, cultural pieces such as poetry, analysis, and more.

"El Salvador, Isthmus, and Revolution" analyzes the revolutionary tactics of the Communist Party of El Salvador in its struggle against military dictatorships and imperialist influences. The author argues that, contrary to the Party leadership's pacifist illusions, the circumstances in El Salvador necessitate armed struggle. "USA: The Hour of the Mau Mau" is a speech given by Malcolm X in December 1964 on confronting racist violence with black violence. "The Mercenaries of the Empire" examines the abject imperialist policies of Portugal, which despite being the poorest European nation, expends half its budget on maintaining its grip over numerous territories. "Brazil: the Accelerated Sell-Out" is a report on the economic exploitation of Brazil by US capitalism and the Brazilian government's complete surrender to these policies. "Dhufar: Rebellion in the Gulf" summarizes the state of revolutionary armed struggle against capitalism and imperialism in the Arabian Gulf. "Counterinsurgency" is the transcript of a speech given by a United States Army General on tactics of "counterinsurgency;" it is presented in Tricontinental to contextualize the need for organization in revolutionary movements across the world. "Culture and Liberation" is an excerpt of Huey Newton's address on September 26, 1968. Newton lays out a revolutionary framework for reclaiming economic and social institutions and moving towards a society in which all cultures are respected and uplifted.

"Crisis and Debt in Sub-Saharan Africa" analyzes the fundamental causes of economic and social crisis in Sub-Saharan countries. These crises stem from internal insufficiencies created by colonialism and the growing debt associated with international economic relations. The author argues that the only solution is the cancellation of foreign debt and the establishment of a New International Economic Order. "Life and Work of Ho Chi Minh" pays homage on the centenary of his birth. This article details his life and the struggle he organized against French and U.S imperialism in Vietnam. "Militarism in Puerto Rico" describes the militarization of Puerto Rican society in order to serve US imperialistic interests. "TV Marti - A New US Aggression Against Cuba" argues that the new TV project 'TV Marti' is the latest attempt by the US to sabotage the Cuban Revolution. This article outlines the propaganda used against the revolution and the history of US aggression towards Cuba which violates international law and human rights. "An Overview" is the transcript of the speech "It's Time to Raise our Determination to Struggle" delivered by General of the Army Raul Castro Ruz, First Vice President of the Councils of State and of Ministers of Cuba, at the 9th Summit of Non-Aligned Countries in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on September 9, 1989. "Books of Today" features chapters from the book 'The Mark of Zorro' which describe the historic feats of Commander Francisco Rivera Quintero. Quintero is a Sandinista hero who symbolizes the underground struggle for the liberation of his country.

"The Tupamaro Guerilla" is a excerpt from Maria Esther Gilio's novel which documents the Tupamaro National Liberation Movement's occupation of the city of Pando in homage to Che Guevara. "The Discrepant Military" written by Gabriel Molina which analyzes the actions of the Peruvian generals and their anti-imperialist government. "Peru, A Step" is the summary of an interview by Pedro Higa and includes a speech he made at the VII Congress of the International Journalists Organization. Here Higa outlines the revolutionary objectives and fundamental features of the Peruvian process of constructing a 'democratic, just and free society'. "Ivory Coast: Pilot State for Neocolonialism" is a report by revolutionary journalist Michele Firk which sheds light on the native population living in the Ivory Coast, a neo-colony of West Africa. "Christianism and Marxism" is an interview with Colombian priest Rene Garcia. This interview sheds light on the situation in Colombia which has radicalized a group of priests and fellow citizens to fight for national and social liberation. "Chile From Yesterday and Toward Tomorrow" is an interview with Chilean journalist Hernan Uribe who presents his opinion on Chile's decision to take the road towards political sovereignty and economic independence. "Chile: The Copper Conspiracy" is a report that details how the CIA, international speculators and financial groups conspired to drive down the price of Chile's most important export. "A Necklace of Colonies" analyzes the English-speaking Caribbean and their revolt against British and American imperialism. "Venezuela: The Civilization of Black Gold" details the capitalist exploitation of Venezuela through the extraction of oil and iron ore. This article details the extreme economic divide within the country between the rich and the poor. "Sandino, Proletarian Guerrilla" details Augusto Cesar Sandino's pioneering efforts of leading a successful guerrilla movement in Nicaragua. His legacy stands as a revolutionary symbol that preceded Ernesto Che Guevara. "Genocide in Angola" is an urgent appeal from the Leadership Committee of the MPLA to the people of the world in regards to the Portuguese destruction of harvests in Angola's liberated zones. Chemical products have appeared throughout these zones which have poisoned rivers and marshes in a renewed attempt at genocide.

"Unity Without Boundaries" is Fidel's speech on the 10th anniversary of the first defeat of US imperialism in the Americas at The Bay of Pigs. "Viet Nam, 1971" summarizes the present civilian and military aspect of South Viet Nam, including life in the liberated zones. "Unique Ireland" is a historical analysis of the movement in Northern Ireland. "Parenthesis" is a historical and economic analysis of Guinea. In 1970 mercenaries attempted to overthrow Sekou Toure in a mission that was plotted by Portugal and other western powers. This article aims to promote an understanding of why imperialism conspires against the Guinean road to socialism. "Brazil: The 30 Hour Plan" details Brazil's plan to militarily intervene in Latin American countries where there were efforts to establish a socialist government, especially in Uruguay. In return, the U.S. would grant Brazil a total monopoly of power in this area. "Colombian Guerrilla" details the resurgence of rural Colombian guerrilla activity, making the movement one of the most advanced rural guerrilla struggles in Latin America. "News behind the News - Okinawa" details the explosion that took place at the US Air Force Base, Kadena. This B-52 bomber was taking off for the Viet Nam war zone when it crashed and all of its deadly cargo exploded. The crash site was located near the Chibana munitions depot and had the course of the B-52 bomber varied slightly, an entire population would have been wiped out. "Boomerang for Israel" describes the arrest, imprisonment and trial, in Israel, of Taisir Kubaa, president of the Palestinian's Student's Union. Kubaa was tortured and charged with participating of the sabotage of an Israeli airliner. "Notes on the Cultural Life of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam" is an excerpt of two chapters from Peter Weiss' book on the history, poetry and culture of the Vietnamese people.

"A Vietnamese Fighter" is an autobiography of a Vietnamese hero, Nguyen Van Quang, where he states why he became a fighter for the National Liberation Front. "Indonesia: Portrait of a Neocolony" details the New Order established under Generals Suharto and Nasution, and Foreign Minister Adam Malik. This new order came about when Sukarno was removed from presidency during a bloodbath against Indonesian communists. This New Order is pro-U.S. and has opened Indonesia's rich natural resources to U.S. corporations under the guidance of the World Bank. "Apartheid, Imperialist Monster" an article by Alex La Guma, a South African intellectual, where he analyzes the nature of white South Africa's colonialist-imperialist policies. "Education in Free Mozambique" a collection of first-hand accounts of the meaning of education to FRELIMO fighters. FRELIMO is the liberation front in Mozambique. "Present and Future of a Yankee Base" a history of the struggle for control of Eritrea and an analysis of the importance of Kagnew Station to the imperialist control of Africa. Eritrea's geographic location makes it ideal for the establishment of a major U.S. communications base. "Irrintzik" a summary of the history of the Basque people, their struggle for national self-determination and freedom, and their organization the ETA. The Basque people live in the north of Spain and south of France in the mountainous Pyrenees region but have been subject to Spanish dictatorship. "The Ford of Betrayal" details the last days of "the guerrilla Tania" who infiltrated the Bolivia's high society, becoming of one Cuba's most successful spies in Latin America. This details her final days as a member of Che's guerrilla group before being killed in an ambush. "The Irregular Armies" is a short story about the killing of the Bolivian colonel in West Germany last year. This colonel cut Che's hands off and in turn was executed by a woman member of the Bolivian ELN. "Bolivia: People Aplenty, but They Lack Arms" details one of the military coups in Bolivia in 1971. The ultra-right wing government pushed out General Juan Jose Torres' nationalist-reformist government. "Panama Canal, Sociological Experiment" recounts the history of the Panama Canal , how the Canal Zone came to be in U.S. hands and U.S. cultural penetration of Panama. "Ecuador, The Oil Orgy" discusses the discovery in Ecuador of some of the largest oil deposits in the world. The rights to extract oil have been sold to various oil companies creating a petroleum "festival". "To the Editor, A Letter on Peru"

"Fruits of Struggle" Amilcar Cabral was the leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and the Cape Verde Islands (PAIGC) until he was assassinated in 1973. Here he analyzes the situation in Guinea-Bisseau and describes some of the reforms led by the PAIGC in the liberated zones. He also describes the effects of the national liberation wars in the colonies on the internal economic and political affairs of Portugal. "The Nixon Doctrine" is an analysis of the roots and strategy of the Nixon Doctrine and its application in Vietnam. "The Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam" a brief summary of the 9 chapters of the Agreement on Ending the War signed in January of 1973. "The Richest Heritage" traces the history of the Vietnamese struggle over the last thousand years that has created the successful "Peoples War". "All for Vietnam" a speech given by Fidel Castro during his tour to socialist Europe and Africa. The speech was given when the U.S had resumed bombing and had mined strategic waterways in Northern Vietnam. This reflects the total commitment of the Cuban people to revolution. "The War and the Tumpamaros" describes the conditions in Uruguay due to the conflict between the National Liberation Movement and right-wing terrorist groups. Despite increased repression of the left, the Tupamaros remained determined to overcome setbacks and build a victorious revolutionary movement. "The Colonial Case of Puerto Rico" is the text of a presentation given by the Cuban Ambassador to the United Nations which details the history of U.S. domination over Puerto Rico. This presentation along with various other protests and mobilizations led to the United Nation's Decolonization Committee to declare Puerto Rico a colony of the U.S. "On the Reunification of Korea" statement by Kim Il Sung on the conditions which exist between the two parts of Korea. It claims that the U.S. continues to try to keep the two parts divided by using military intervention, economic domination and the use of UN troops in the South. "Chile: The First Battle" is a speech made at a session of the Central Committee of the Socialist Party after Salvador Allende's electoral victory. The head of Araucanian land explains the historic mission of the People's Unity government which is to put into practice an economic policy that will rescue the wealth of the country from foreign exploitation and eliminate class inequality in Chile's social structure. "Marx and Engels and Colonialism" is an in-depth analysis of the colonial problem from the scope of Marx and Engels' colonial problem of their period. "USA: Policing the Empire" analyzes the use of the police force by neo-colonial powers to repress revolutionary efforts on the urban scene. This article unearths police efforts to strengthen US bases in neo-colonial lands. "Brazil: The Last Days of a Dictator" explains the mechanism for transferring power in Brazil between each U.S. backed dictator. "Burundi and Rwanda: The Same Imperialist Strategy" presents an understanding of the political reality and pivotal role of Burundi and Rwanda, countries bordering the highly coveted lands of the Congo and Tanganyika. "Social-Democracy and Imperialism" analyzes socialist efforts in Europe and argues that these countries have actually bolstered the bourgeoisie which has sustained American imperialism, delaying the liberation of the developing world. "Lenin and the Colonial Peoples" commemorates Lenin after his death and includes a report on the National and Colonial Questions at the Fifth World Congress. "Cambodia and People's War" is an interview with Sarin Chhak, Minister of Foreign Relations of the Royal Government of National union of Cambodia. Themes include the political-military situation, the contradictions in the ranks of the regime and attitudes towards the international aid Cambodia receives. "For a Peace With Liberty" is an interview with Huynh Van Ba, delegate of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Viet Nam, where he examines the real objectives of Nixon's "peace proposal". "OSPAAAL in the Council of AAPSO" statement of solidarity by OSPAAAL with Afro-Asian People's Solidarity Organization. "Puerto Rico Crisis and Independence" interview with Carlos Padilla, delegate of the Pro-Independence Movement of Puerto Rico in which he refers to the present state of the struggle against US colonial domination. "Marighella: Creative Life and Action" is an excerpt of the introduction to the book on Carlos Marighella, Brazilian fighter and the head of National Liberation Action (ALN). This intro was written by Joaquim Camara Ferreira who succeeded Marighella as the head of the ALN.

"Unity Without Boundaries" Fidel Castro's speech at the closing of the meeting held at the tenth anniversary of the Victory of Giron which outlines Cuba's political position and historic content. "People and Technique" remarks from Louis Behanzin, Secretary of State for Ideology, at a 1970 seminar. Behanzin was in charge of planning and initiating the educational reform that became general middle-level education in the Centers of Revolutionary Education. Guinea was the only African country to say no to the referendum imposed by French colonialism. "Parenthesis" economist Eskor Toyo provides economic and historic data of Guinea. Toyo exposes the imperialist plot supported by Guinean bureaucrats and businessmen who want to switch back to capitalism. "Unique Ireland" analyzes anti-colonial movements in Ireland that predate other national liberation movements. "Imperial Self-Censureship" James Higgins speech on the United State's press and the role of the revolutionary journalist. Higgins was a professor of journalism at the University of Boston and a contributor to The Nation and Liberation News Service. Higgins gives a historic sketch of free speech and the need to for young radical involvement in the press. "At the Root" the Cuban Revolutionary Government held its first National Congress of Education and Culture in Havana where professors and teachers discussed the issues relating to educational development plans outlined by the Revolution. This congress comes 10 years after Cuba declared itself free of illiteracy. "Five Years" speech by Domingo Garcia given at the 5th anniversary of the constitution of the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) Executive Secretariat. Garcia was the Assistant Secretary-General of OSPAAAL. "Notes on the Cultural Life of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam" excerpts from Peter Weiss' book where he outlines the history, poetry and culture of the Vietnamese people.

"Black Power and the Revolutionary Struggle" interview with Huey Newton discussing the Black Panther Party, cultural nationalism and white revolutionaries. "Racists Must Go" a call to liberate Zimbabwe from the racist minority dictatorship. "Under the Banner of Struggle" details efforts of revolutionaries in South Korea (Unified Revolutionary Party) to end their state of colonial slavery and reach national liberation. "Imperialist Penetration Through Comics" analyzes the technical and ideological development of comics. "Mexican-Americans and Land Claims" statements from Mexican-American leader Reyes Lopez Tijerina who argues that militants within the U.S. must begin making land claims in order to bring about fundamental changes in society. "Juan Pablo Chang -- Latin American Revolutionary" Jorge Turner's analysis of the condition of the revolutionary and combatant. This article is a report about "Chino", a Peruvian guerrilla who was assassinated alongside Che. "Pop Art -- Guerrilla Warfare" discusses various tactics for handling police and police agencies connected to agencies dedicated to struggle. The purpose of this article is to make these tactics known to movement organizations and organizers. "For Viet Nam, until Victory or Death" this is an address of the delegation of the Executive Secretariat of the OSPAAAL before the "Extraordinary Conference in Support of and Solidarity with the Vietnamese People in Their Struggle Against Imperialist Aggression" held in Cairo. "'Information on Colonialism and Imperialism,' 'Ideals and Earnest Desires,' 'Not Only to 'Admire' but also to 'Do Something'" are all letters to OSPAAAL. "Asia: a Just Endeavor to Liberate Their Peoples" is an appeal from the Executive of OSPAAAL highlighting International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Asia. "The Revolutionary Line of Independence" a letter of congratulations to Kim Il Sung on the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "The Laotian Revolution and its High Combative Spirit" celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the proclamation of independence of Laos after the Laotian Revolution. "To Graduate as Men" highlights Bolivian guerrilla efforts to undermine the U.S. backed Bolivian regime and pays tribute to Che Guevara.
